About Us

Kathleen Balthazar

Hello,

My name is Kathleen Balthazar, the only child of Cassie Balthazar Pimentel. My mother left Cane River in 1936 joining her Aunt and Uncle Alphonse and Nettie Delphin Beaudoin. The Beaudoin's first moved to Seventh Ward in New Orleans, La. before eventually settling in Queens, New York. New York is where they, as well as my mother, remained for the rest of their lives. My family continues to live in the upstate New York area.

The Cane River Trading Company

The Cane River Trading Co. was established in 1994 with a desire to share information about Cane River and its culture. The newsletter is a way to keep Creoles in touch with events and with each other.

The address below is of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Melrose/Isle Brevelle, La. The patriarch N. Augustine (Papa Gisane) donated land for the church. It is included to provide a map and directions to Cane River. St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery contains tombstones dating back to 1839.

Who We Are

I began collecting genealogy in the 1960s with an initial focus on my Delphin-Balthazar branches. I soon realized that Cane River Creoles are so interconnected that we can truly say...we are all related. I then began collecting data for anyone from Cane River. I now follow seven family branches: the Beaudoin's, Chevalier's, Jones', Marinoviches, Metoyer's, Prudhomme's, and Clifton/Terrell's. The Metoyer branch is the most extentive with a present database over 700 pages.

My daughter Elisa is the assistant editor of the newsletter and has had that role for several years. The photo below is Elisa, myself, and my late mother Cassie (1913-2004).
